Created by Jack Kirby, the Silver Surfer first appeared in the comic book Fantastic Four #48, published in 1966.

Originally a young astronomer named Norrin Radd on the planet Zenn-La, he saved his homeworld from the planet devourer, Galactus, by serving as his herald.

Galactus imbues him with a portion of the Power Cosmic, transforming him into the Silver Surfer.

Radd serves Galactus for an unspecified amount of time. Eventually, the  Surfer meets the Fantastic Four and Alicia Masters, girlfriend to the Thing, on Earth. Touched by their nobility, he rebels against Galactus, who is eventually driven off. Before he leaves, he confines the Surfer to Earth with an invisible barrier that affects only him

The Surfer, while confined to Earth, fought many terrible opponents with the likes of Doctor Doom and Mephisto. Very soon after, he found allies in Hulk and Namor, and the trio formed the formidable Titans Three.

Few have heard of them to be honest, but when Dr Strange signed up for the club and changed their name, they became the better-heard of The Defenders.

The Silver Surfer wields the Power Cosmic, granting him superhuman strength, endurance, and senses, as well as the ability to absorb and manipulate the universe's ambient energy. The Surfer can navigate through interstellar space and hyperspace, which he can enter after exceeding the speed of light. He has proven capable of time travel on several occasions, even able to make others time-travel with him.

He is so powerful, that many had tried to enslave him to their biddings, absorb his powers, capture his soul, possess him (Carnage symbiote), with all eventually failing miserably one way or another.
